{"id":1160,"date":"2024-04-11T08:11:41","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T06:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fringeitaliaoff.com\/cose-fringe-italia-off\/"},"modified":"2025-03-05T15:57:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T14:57:11","slug":"what-is-fringe-italia-off","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/fringeitaliaoff.com\/en\/what-is-fringe-italia-off\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Fringe Italia Off"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>WHAT IS FRINGE ITALIA OFF?<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Fringe Italia Off is an artistic and cultural project focused on regional marketing and off-season cultural tourism<\/strong>, organized by the associations \u201cLa Memoria del Teatro\u201d and \u201cMilano Off\u201d. <strong>They connect the cities of Milan and Catania through two Fringe Festivals, MILANO OFF and CATANIA OFF<\/strong> (held between September and October), and develop initiatives from November to May with its annual theatrical season titled PALCO OFF.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>2012<\/strong>, the theatrical season \u201c<strong>PALCO OFF<\/strong> \u201cTheatrical Voices \u2013 Auth-Actors of our Time,\u201d was launched in Catania. Closely linked with the national and international \u201cOff\u201d theatre circuit, it showcased the best of independent productions, and acted as a hub for initiatives created by communities that share the Fringe culture throughout Italy.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>2016<\/strong>, the founders <strong>decided to leverage their partnerships and various relationships with artistic directors from the World Fringe Community<\/strong> to organize the first Fringe in Milan. Milano Off Fringe Festival is now in its sixth edition.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>2022<\/strong>, they established <strong>Catania Off Fringe Festival<\/strong>, facilitated by the city&#8217;s walkability in central areas. Catania Off Fringe Festival is now in its third edition.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/FRIGE-OFF_post_LOGO-ITALIA-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The mission of Fringe Italia Off is to create a network that connects independent artists, theaters and performance spaces, and audiences.<\/strong> It positively impacts the local social fabric on various levels, from students to the elderly, and in all city neighborhoods, with benefits for tourism and for the region as a whole.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fringe Italia Off is part of the World Fringe Association, which includes over 250 festivals from around the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FRINGE ITALIA OFF aims to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make live performing arts transversally <strong>accessible to everyone<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enhance the cultural projects offered within the region<\/strong>\u2014 especially in vulnerable areas near the outskirts of the city\u2014through performing arts, meetings with actors and artists, and conferences with professionals, cultural associations, and industry experts;<\/li>\n<li>Create <strong>new audiences<\/strong>, with a particular focus on young people, disadvantaged groups, and the elderly;<\/li>\n<li>Develop a <strong>prominent exchange network<\/strong> between artists and industry professionals;<\/li>\n<li>Continue to <strong>connect the cities of Milan and Catania to an international \u201cOff\u201d<\/strong> or fringe, artistic market and contribute to the development of cultural tourism;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Facilitate healthy and empathetic moments<\/strong> of community building;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promote both tangible and intangible cultural heritage<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthen the city suburbs&#8217; overall territorial and cultural marketing<\/strong>, in connection with each historical center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>It&#8217;s a multidisciplinary cultural festival that features performances from a variety of genres in non-conventional spaces.<\/b> The term &#8220;fringe&#8221; refers to performances produced outside institutional circuits, which allows artists the ability to perform independently. \u201cFringe\u201d literally means &#8220;on the margins&#8221;, a term coined at the first version of the Edinburgh Festival (1947). Over the years, the Fringe Festival model has spread worldwide, particularly within Anglo-Saxon communities but also throughout many cities across the world. In Avignon, the OFF D\u2019AVIGNON FESTIVAL was born in 1966 as an alternative to the more institutional &#8220;IN&#8221; Festival.
